Once Upon a Surrogate: The Stork's Helpers Book Review!

There are families made up of all sorts of people and formed in different ways. How can we teach our children about diversity in families and to open their minds to all the possibilities out there? Books are a great way to do this! One book I recently discovered is Once Upon a Surrogate: The Stork's Helpers!  This is a great book that is written by Jill Hancock Reeder!  Her daughters, ages 6 and 10 did the illustration! This is truly a unique book!!

This is a brand new children's book released 10/10/10. You don't have to be a child to enjoy the book. You don't even have to know anything about surrogacy. The book is written in a fun way for all to enjoy.  It was a great way to learn more and to help open your minds!  I really enjoyed sharing this book with my daughters!!  And since Jill has been a surrogate, she has shared her first hand experience to help us understand it more!! This is a wonderful book!

Barkonomics:Tips for Frugal Fidos Book Review

I love my dog.  He is seriously part of our family!  What would I do without him? I ask myself this now, but when my husband wanted to get the dog I was less than enthusiastic.  Dogs are expensive!  Vet bills, registration, food, toys....the list goes on and on.  Where can we go to find a way to take care of our furry friends without breaking the bank? For a frugal mama like me, this was an important question to answer!

I came across Barkonomics: tips for frugal fidos. This book has so many wonderful tips on where to get your pet supplies for less, how to save on adoption fees, vet fees and so much more!! I learned a lot that I didn't know before! You can get your pet's medications at the drug store, instead of paying the more expensive vet prices!  In some areas (including mine!) you get a discounted registration price when you have your dog spayed or neutered.  And of course it is so much cheaper to obtain a dog from a local shelter than to purchase a pure breed dog or even one at a pet store. And a bonus-a lot of shelters these days micro chip your pet, making it easy to identify your dog and contact you should it run away.

Barkonomics is organized into different chapters, and in the table of contents each chapter has a list of some of the types of tips for each category.  This makes it super quick and easy to find a quick tip whenever you need it! The authors Paris Permenter and John Bigley, did a wonderful job of carefully explaining the best process for choosing your dog, feeding it, caring for it and more, all with frugal living in mind!!

Paris and John love their dogs, and even have their own website, dogtipper.com.  This website is a great place to find dog tips, and to help you live a more frugal life with your Fido!  There are even great giveaways!!☺ There is a lot to see so make sure you stop by dogtipper.com to check it out!  Also find them on Twitter @DogTipper and click here for their Facebook page!

Your Baby Can Read Review & Complete Set Giveaway!! {CLOSED}

Have you seen the commercials on TV for Your Baby Can Read? The first time I saw it, I couldn't believe it! How do they get a little baby to read what the card says on that commercial? She couldn't even be a year old, and could tell what the words said.  Curious and intrigued, I wondered how effective this program really was.  It caught my husband's eye too, and so I took to the internet in search of this wonderful product.  Your Baby Can Read offered me a program to try out on my family, and share with you readers my opinions!! I was more than excited to get this opportunity! I have 3 girls, all between 2 and 5 years. I wish I had been able to start earlier, but as it says in the parent guide, it doesn't matter what age.  At any age, this program can help your child.  So I decided to give it a shot.

The program is something that works when you incorporate all parts together and continuously work with your child.  The first part is simple: let your child watch the dvd.  They are labeled Level 1-5 and have a fun and entertaining way to teach children simple words, by showing the word, having it said multiple times, then showing a picture of what the word is.  Then they use the word with a clip showing what the word is, while they use the word in a sentence. So for example they say "hi".  You see the word "hi" on the screen. It is read by an adult and also a child.  Then they see a child waving hi.  The narrator says something like "the child is saying hi".  And the video runs about 20 minutes.  Some of the words come back up throughout the movie, to help increase recognition via repetition.  I even sit with the kids to be sure they are paying attention and repeating the words with the kids on TV.

Next they have a flap book.  These books go with the dvd level, and feature some of the words from that level.  The words are in large letters on a white page, and the picture to go with the word is underneath the flap.  This helps to reinforce what they saw on the video. Of course, older kids may start to remember the order of words, so if you notice they do this but don't recognize the words out of order, you may want to jump around to mix it up and help them learn.  The books are actually kind of sturdy, which surprised me!

The next step is to use the slider cards that coordinate with the level you are working on. These are the same words from the video and you can do it in any random order to really test and enhance your child's progress.  And for not-so-gentle hands, there are cute mini-sliding board books! These are full of cute pictures to go with everyday words, like bathroom words, kitchen words, play words and more! There are 6 little books, and my kids love them!!

After completing the Your Baby Can Read series,  you can start doing the Your Child Can Read dvds.  these are great to teach, reinforce and expand reading skills.  These are for ages 3 and older, and really help to develop those reading skills! The whole system comes with a great parents guide to help you help the kids! There are teaching cards and even a dvd workshop to help you as a parent understand just why this system works like it does!! Combine this all together, and you can help your child learn how to read!!

So how did it work with my kids? We have been doing the system  almost a month now. We are still working on perfecting level 1 before going on.  My 2 year old has an increase in her vocabulary. She is always surprising me with the words she knows! My 3 year old has an increased interest in reading and she is the only one who actually will sit through the entire dvd when I tell her to. Usually she is the one running around and not watching the TV, but she likes these dvds.  My oldest, who is 5, has been reading small books now and is improving recognition of the words on the cards. I caught her memorizing some of the sequence, so I have changed the order of the books I read to help her learn to recognize the word. We also practice writing to help reinforce the meaning of letters.  Her teacher told me last week she is a month ahead of where she expected my daughter to be! My daughter has also gotten 80-100% on all of her Accelerated reader tests and is already on the 4th level of AR books, and this is the 2nd month of kindergarten! She is doing well and I am so proud! The Your Baby Can Read set definitely contributed to her progress!!

And lucky you! Your Baby Can Read also sent me a complete program to giveaway on my blog!!! What Haven't They Told Me? Parenting Book review and giveaway (12 winners!)

What Haven't They Told Me?
Don't we all wish that when  your baby was born, he or she came with an instruction manual??? I mean, you spend 9 months doing everything you can to get ready and when that moment finally arrives you are totally clueless! All those baby tips go out the window! Well Lorraine Fisher of Off Ramp Publishing has put together some of the best tips in a wonderful guide called "What Haven't They Told Me? Practical Tips for Surviving and Thriving During Baby's First Year"  This book is full of tips on a broad range of topics: how to make life easier, who to call in certain situations, even how to take care of yourself!

I love that there are quotes and tips from real moms, to give you another take on things or ideas that make  you say "ah-ha! why didn't I  think of that?"  Who better to tell you what you really should do or expect than someone who has already been there? They give you advice on everything, and it is a great collection of tips!! Some of my favorite tips include putting a changing station on each level of a multi leveled home, to enjoy every moment with your child (even the ones when you are up at 4 am with a sick kid), because they don't last forever, and to keep changing supplies in the car for emergencies!  These are just a few of so many tips in this 96 page book!

One tip I wish I had known with my first one? Page 85 has this tip from Elizabeth in Colorado, mother of 2 yr old Joey:  "NEVER put a Band-Aid on a baby's finger! You may come back to find it's no longer on the finger, but in your baby's mouth!"  When my oldest daughter was around 6 months old or so, she cut her finger on a can someone had on the table when they were holding her. We put a band-aid on it to keep it clean and stop the blood. The next morning we were in the kitchen and she started choking pretty bad.  She spit out the band-aid!   Definitely a scary situation!

Here is the product description
Being a new or expectant parent is a scary proposition. After all, babies don't come with "how-to" guides. Filled with tips and helpful hints for restful sleep, easy travel, and clever comfort, "What Haven't They Told Me?" is just what every first-time mom and dad needs.
You will learn "tricks of the trade" from experienced moms and dads:
  • who to call when parental patience and energy wear thin
  • what to have on hand before baby arrives
  • when to put coffee in the baby's room (it's not for the parents to drink!)
  • where to stash snacks and water during baby's wakeful nights
  • why you should schedule doctor appointments early in the morning
  • how to bathe the baby without worry
This book of tips is a must-have for any new or expectant parent. Give it as a baby shower or Mother's Day gift or buy one for yourself.

I also was fortunate to get to read the Let's Get Ready series of books! They include:

These books are a favorite for my daughter who is going to Kindergarten in September! They have everything: abc's, numbers, telling time, opposites and  so much more! All the core curriculum  packed in a fun book! This book is fun for parents and kids! You can even use a dry erase marker on the books! Each page is filled with learning in a beautifully illustrated book! The series is by Stacey Kannenberg.  These books are each $17!

Lorraine has graciously offered 12 readers an autographed copy of her book,  "What Haven't They Told Me? Practical Tips for Surviving and Thriving During Baby's First Year"
